Le Méridien Reforma

Le Meridien has fewer restaurants and amenities but what it lacks in facilities, it more than makes up for in service. We visited the lobby bar and the restaurant during our visit. Both were well designed with a modern feel that was still very comfortable. The lobby bar had several different seating areas. The bartender was friendly and had decorated the bar with his personal futbol memorabilia for the World Cup.

The restaurant had a great menu and live music on the night we went. There is bar and table seating. It had a busy, fun, and lively atmosphere (which seems to make the beer taste a little better). It is also open for breakfast in the morning.

One detail that stood out was the parking. My husband has one very specific pet peeve—he doesn’t like anyone else driving his car. He always asks the valet. The staff happily allowed him to park himself, something that may seem insignificant or picky to many travelers but it means a lot to him. It was another example of the team doing everything possible to make our stay comfortable.

Our Take

Sheraton wins on number of amenities. Le Méridien wins on guest experience. Unless you are in town on business and need facilities or must play tennis while in Mexico City the Le Meridien wins on ambiance. It is a warmer, lively, and fun experience. We will call it a tie.

Sheraton Maria Isabel

Our interactions with the staff felt professional but impersonal.

Check-in was slower than expected, and despite traveling with Marriott status and a travel advisor, we never felt particularly welcomed through the process. I never expect special treatment because of my profession or anything like that, but I do expect to feel like a valued hotel guest.  Instead, we left feeling more like an inconvenience which felt kind of awkward.

The staff certainly wasn’t rude, but they weren’t attentive either. For example, there was lots of staff but there was no luggage assistance. You might pass 8 gentlemen working in the hotel lobby and zero of them will say buenas tardes. It was an unusual experience for a Sheraton where typically staff is very warm and attentive. I have only stayed here once so I cannot say if this is typical (or if everyone got scolded in a staff meeting before we checked in).

Le Méridien Reforma

Le Méridien, on the other hand, completely exceeded our expectations.

After a long drive into Mexico City, and spending 4 hours waiting for a protest to end that shut down Reforma Ave (we love teachers!) we arrived late, very tired, and a lot flustered. The staff noticed we looked like we had a long day.  Instead of simply handing us room keys, they escorted us to the bar, invited us to relax, and surprised us with complimentary drinks and snacks while they finalized our check-in. That set the tone for the entire stay.

Staff called to check in several times during our stay and ask whether we needed anything. Every interaction felt genuine, warm, and personal rather than scripted. By the time we checked out, we felt like we weren’t just leaving a hotel—we were saying goodbye to new friends. For us, that level of hospitality made all the difference.

The cool lobby bar with the friendly bartender, cozy restaurant with music and local flavor, and attentive staff gave the hotel an overall vibe of a boutique hotel. It is not a boutique hotel obviously so I think this speaks more to the hotel management and the environment and staff they have curated to create such an amazing, fun, and cozy atmosphere. It is perfectly fitting the warmth and hospitality of Central Mexico. We loved it.

Our Honest Recommendation

Before visiting both properties, we assumed we’d prefer the Sheraton. After all, it has the iconic location, the larger property, more restaurants, and more amenities. But after staying at both, our favorite was Le Méridien Mexico City Reforma—and it wasn’t even close.

The Sheraton may check more boxes on a comparison chart, but Le Méridien reminded us why hospitality matters. The warmth of the staff, the thoughtful touches throughout our stay, and the genuine care they showed turned what could have been just another hotel stay into one of our favorite experiences in Mexico City.

Anyone can build a beautiful hotel but creating an environment and an experience where guests feel welcomed, appreciated, and genuinely cared for is much harder. In my experience, that’s exactly what Le Méridien delivered.

However, we found that Le Méridien’s personalized service more than made up for the lack of a lounge. The staff went out of their way to ensure we had a memorable stay, proving that outstanding hospitality isn’t always measured by elite perks alone. Every guest gets the elite treatment.

Which hotel is better for first-time visitors to Mexico City?

If it’s your first visit to Mexico City, we recommend the Sheraton Maria Isabel.

After staying at both hotels, however, Le Méridien became our favorite. The outstanding service, spacious suites, thoughtful touches, and genuinely welcoming staff created an experience we’ll remember long after we’ve forgotten how many restaurants each hotel had.

If you’re looking for the best location, Marriott Bonvoy elite benefits, and resort-style amenities, Sheraton Maria Isabel Mexico City Reforma is an excellent choice.

If you value personalized service, spacious suites, and genuine hospitality, we wholeheartedly recommend Le Méridien Mexico City Reforma.

Both hotels have their strengths, but if we were planning another trip to Mexico City tomorrow, we’d book Le Méridien again without hesitation.

It reminded us that while amenities are nice, it’s the people who often make a hotel stay truly memorable.
